When I met Carina of Calou Clogs at Formex back in February, my plan was to start “Walk a Mile in my Clogs” immediately with walks in Stockholm.
Carina was a bit skeptical. After all, it had been snowing for two months straight and showed no sign of stopping. Yes, well, clogs + snow… Not my most well thought out plan. |
But that didn’t discourage Carina. From her brightly colored Spring collection, she plucked a hold-over from Fall… the Blinka boot in brown leather.

From top: Nina clog, Moa boot, Blinka boots in black and brown.
Calou’s clogs are a bit different. While they do have a couple of wood-heeled clogs, Calou’s main focus is on comfort. That’s why most of their clogs feature a springy polyurethane sole and heel instead of traditional wood. Despite being a bit disappointed by this, I was glad to see I still got a 7mm piece of wood for my foot rest, and had high hopes that the increased comfort would dash away any remaining wistfulness I had for wood.

The shoes look solid and well built. A nice quality leather is used for the rest of the boot, and Carina told me that the shoes are all handmade in Sweden. I like that.
Calou’s two wood-heeled styles
In Stockholm, it just never stopped snowing so my clogging had to wait. It finally happened this weekend in San Francisco, in one of my favorite parks of all time, the Presidio. And what a beautiful day it was for a walk! Here are some highlights…
Sidewalks and cement at the start… but not for long.
A forest path and Spring in bloom.
Good grip… a helpful feature on this walk. The boots are holding up beautifully… no problems yet!
And finally back to signs of civilization. The old buildings of the Presidio military base mean we’ve reached our final destination.

All in all, these boots are comfortable. Their soft sole lives up to the promise. Of course the leather will continue to get softer as time goes on, and socks (which I will definitely wear next time) will make it even better.
With the clog competition heating up these days, the non-wood style isn’t my top pick, but with these boots it’s growing on me. Luckily it’s chilly enough in San Francisco to wear boots in summer. And thanks to Calou I look forward to wearing mine often.

Hi Tiffany,
I love those Blinka boots. Do you have any idea how I might be able to get my hands on a pair? I live in NYC, but it doesn’t seem that Calou is carried anywhere here.
thanks!
Meral

Hi Meral – Hm… being from the Fall line might make it tougher. But let me check with Calou for you to see if there might be a Swedish shop that can help! Will get back to you :)

I’ve already given Meral info on the sizes & styles available direct from Calou, but for anyone else out there who’s interested… especially shops that might be interested in stocking Calou(!)… please contact Carina by email. I’m sure she’d love to hear from you!

Hi. My name is Ann Tiernan. I live in Williamsburg, Virginia — USA. I am openiclogs small privately owned shoe store here and am very interested in carrying your clogs. Is that a possibility and what is your price range?
PS I do not yet have a FACEBOOK or WEB page that is up and running, but both are currently being designed.

I love these! I have been wearing clogs for years so it’s funny to me that they are now in style. The Blinka boots are EXACTLY what I have been looking for. I also love the green slide sandals and many of the other styles. Refreshing change from Danskos and so cool.

Hi Sara, yes the Blinka boots are lovely. Take a peek at my response to Meral above- you’ll want to reach out to Carina in Sweden to see if that style is in production again for fall and what she has available- she can probably send a pair out to you. I still don’t know of any shops in the US carrying them… but Carina will!
