Cate is Swedish, Nelson is Spanish. Together they are cate&nelson, the Sweden-based design duo that have been getting a lot of attention since they set up shop in 2007 for doing things a little bit different.

Their “crisis” shelf was released recently at the Stockholm Furniture Fair. It comes complete with permanently fixed items on display to remind us just how fleeting some of the objects we hold dear really are.

And some bad news for the duo’s “oz” chair. The chair is designed like an oversized book of colorful felt samples. For something new, you simply turn over a new page, and voila! Your black chair is now red. One of a kind, right? Well, no.
It happens that the design group Front just produced a very similar concept for Ikea. I’m glad to report that the coincidence has been looked into, and that’s all it is. A coincidence.
Sadly for cate&nelson and the oz chair though, it seems Design House Stockholm has shuttered its plans to carry the chair. It had been set to release this year.
:: While we’re on the subject, cate&nelson’s “Fiat Lux” and especially “mr. twister” lamps also have that future design classic look to them. I hope we start seeing them pop up in shops soon. ::
