“Unforgiving and elemental, with its rocky beaches and weather-beaten forests of gnarled pine, Fårö epitomized [Ingmar] Bergman’s unsparing and unsettled internal world. There’s a sensuality in its hardness that reveals itself only if you look closely: Fårö does its best not to charm you.” — Diane Solway, W Magazine
I’ve written before about Ingmar Bergman and his island home of Fårö here.
In July a small team from W Magazine were allowed into his most private home and haven to photograph it for publication for the first time ever. Shortly after, his houses, his cinema and their contents were sold off at auction.
In case you missed the finished story in the magazine’s November Art issue, you can still read it on the W Magazine website.
And the short film they shot on location is simply beautiful. Bergman clearly wasn’t the only one inspired by Fårö.
