Karin Carlback tends to notice familiar faces in her treasure trove of a shop, retro etc, on the trendy part of Folkungagatan in Stockholm. She likes to know her regulars.
That’s how she got talking to Lotta Kühlhorn, a graphic designer who lived in the neighborhood who had become well known for designing attention-grabbing book covers.
Lotta’s designs tended toward throwback themes. Simple shapes and bright colors with a retro flair. Familiar iconic forms taken from pop culture and everyday life.
Karin had a thing for vintage. Simple shapes and bright colored items for the home that were both fun and nostalgic.
Together they’d be an unbeatable team. They put their heads together to ask “what do we miss from granny’s house?” And their Mixed Apple cutting board with its signature shape was born.
Today, Lotta does the designing and Karin takes care of the business end through her shop, retro etc. How does Karin know when a new product is just right?
“When it feels totally right in the stomach – then it’s right for us. I want to feel it in my hands right away. I can’t wait.”

I’m sure glad that Lotta embraced “junk culture.”
