My name is Camilla and I run Melltorp krukmakeri & produktformgivning, or Melltorp pottery and product design in English.

My preference is to create things that serve a useful purpose, like a mug or a pot. It’s important to me that they work well in all of the many ways they’ll be used.

In my workshop I work in clay – usually throwing it on a potter’s wheel and sometimes using molds. I also design products for clients that aren’t handmade. For me, all manufacturing methods are equally fascinating as they each give different characteristics to the finished piece.
My passion is what guides my work, and I rarely know how I want something to turn out when I start. I just keep going until I’m happy with it. My four-year-old daughter is a constant reminder of the importance of play. So I play a lot!

I started my business 10 years ago after finishing my education at the HDK School of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg.
These days my workshop is right next to my house in the town of Skövde, located between two of Europe’s largest lakes and at the foot of Mt. Billingen in central Sweden.

Camilla’s house and garden, with her studio and shop next door
You can come by and visit if you’re ever in town. I have a small shop at the front of my studio that I keep open while I work.

Of course, it’s easy for me to pop out to the workshop whenever I need to keep an eye on the ceramics or just get some extra work done (ceramics need to be monitored during the drying process). My family may not be thrilled with me coming and going all the time, but at least I’m only next door.
Lately I’ve been particularly inspired by the Czech potter Pravoslav Rada. His lovely sculptures of people and animals are so expressive and unique. As a result, I’m now getting into human shapes. So stay tuned. We’ll see where the clay takes me!
