WOODish fabric. photo: Monique Jaoui
With an eye on emphasizing wood’s richest qualities from its amber hues to its lovely grain patterns, Alex Gunnarsson has transformed the material into something completely surprising and impressive.
This is WOODish, a fabric made in a fractal pattern of very thin wooden pieces. Because it’s made by hand and can’t be mass produced, every application is a unique one off.
I think this would make a lovely screen of some sort as the thin wood and spaces in between give it an interesting transparency. It would also add an exciting twist to curtains, wallpaper, tablecloths, and that sort of thing.
As for Alex, its interaction with light and ability to transform from two to three dimensions are particularly appealing. She’d like to see the fabric used in lighting.

beautiful, but isn’t this just an imitation of the fragile wood textiles by Elisa Strozyk (which could be at imm cologne 2010) ??

beo – gosh, I have no idea how to know which came first or if either of the designers were inspired by each other, but both are absolutely gorgeous. Hopefully we’ll see at least one of them make it into regular production.
